Skin Area (Sweden)
"New Skin" Digipak CD 2002, Cold Meat Industry
9.00EUR • approx. 13.1USD [ add to cart ]
A mental, yet physical journey through a nerve system; exploring the inner regions of the body through a mental surgery. Harsh distorted walls of sound mutates into claustrophobic lo-fi - an experience to beautifully suffer, again and again. Lim. to 2000.

Bludgeoning noise, no anesthesia: Skin Area is Magnus Lindh and Martin Bladh (IRM). The info sheet on this claims it is a “mental, yet physical journey through a nerve system.” The aural assault is constructed with idiosyncratic simplicity. It’s a quirky combination of uninspired, easily deciphered instrumentation, alongside speaker grinding, incendiary blasts of eye-crossing noise. “As Whole As I Can Be” opens with a hollow wind gathered from the middle of nowhere, as augmented with a bland bout of dull guitar strumming. Progressively, elements are added that ambush the guitar noodlings: drums pound away, the wind grows boisterous—a tornado of voracious fangs, chewing on the frayed sonic edges--and distortion via machinery abuse escalates to an audacious, headache inducing cacophony. Bass rumblings signify that, below the tornado’s rampage, the earth itself is about to erupt. Droning, tinny instrumentation serves as a backdrop for an extended sample of one who sounds like a methodical, subtly sadistic psychiatrist during “Your Life Is A Gift?” This leads into the complete mental annihilation that is “Opiate Ocean,” not an escape from the insidious prelude, more the sonic confirmation of intentions. Bloated, hacking bursts of noise battle to a bloodless end, before opera (yes, opera) is filtered in, and synths swell and sigh amidst an ocean of clanking, clanging flotsam and jetsam. Skin Area’s familiar instrumentation lacks thrust, but the explosions of noise more than make up for the shoulder shrugging monotony.

A mental, yet physical journey through a nerve system; exploring the inner regions of the body through a mental surgery. "New Skin" reaches for the highest peaks, plunges down into the bottomless pits and subconscious oceans. Harsh distorted walls of sound mutates into claustrophobic lo-fi - an experience to beautifully suffer, again and again. Intense organic collages performed by M Lindh and founding IRM member M Bladh!

Limited edition of 2000 digipak copies with 8 pages booklet. Musicwise: a strange mix of Swans "Soundtracks for the blind", Merzbow and Godspeed You Black Emperor. It´s a lot of traditional instruments used in the recording, distorted and laid effects on it. It surely grows onto you. Limited edition of 2000 digipak copies with 8 pages booklet.
