Alora Crucible (U.S.A.)
"Thymiamatascension - Green Vinyl" 12" LP 2021, House of Mythology
26.00EUR • approx. 37.7USD [ back in stock ] : [ add to cart ]
An intriguing new project by Toby Driver, of Maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot. A self-described tribute to Toby's early love of New Age music, in his own interpretation of the genre.

Smoke from burning incense rises and dances, the sprawling and sensual byproduct of a thing turning to ash. The trees we amputated from ourselves threaten to grow back, the land we tried to escape from beckons us to return. We find out how to come home by running away from it. As we navigate our personal field of burdens, we imagine becoming weightless. How much space is there between a dream and a trial? In Alora Crucible there is none at all.

Biographies are apocryphal time traps. Here there is only fission and the thankfully forgotten coward's dream of photographing statues...

After we disappear, we hope to re-appear. We reach for ways to reinstate the ground beneath us – to reverse the vanishing. Old religions sought the safe passage of the life contained in the body to the nonmaterial spirit realm. That place, it was usually imagined, would be an improvement. It was, at the very least, a somewhere.

Who could foresee the future, when the abstraction of nearly everything into an intangible nowhere would drag us with it whether we wanted to go or not? We drift in liminal nowhere space, unsure which direction we prefer: final oblivion on one side, or a return to Earth on another.

At the very least, a world of things abstracted into nowhere lets us think in terms of the collapse of things into other things. This leaves the mind ripened for imagining the instrument collapsing into the musician collapsing into the idea – then all of it collapses into the landscape, and the landscape spits it back out. This process happens a billion times over every millisecond, and collapse starts to stabilize into a recognizable shape: the artist, becoming not because they are the beginning of something but because they are enmeshed in a procession.

Hands into fingers, fingers into strings, strings into vibrations collapsing into the air, and regenerated as chemical compounds, each one never having been and never to be again. There are pathways under our feet with which plants speak, just like those amongst our above-shoulder nerves. Someone must eventually find out what sound this makes. They must take it upon themselves to sacrifice themselves to it, in the hope that there will be a thereafter more worthy of pursuit than the nowhere of numbers and the empty promises of dead tyrants.

It would be wrong to say that descriptions are graveyards, though they are. The truth is they now reside in graveyards, they populate the soil as a legion of rightfully dead. Only the heft and lift of the poet deserve respiration, but the poets have been driven into a different labyrinth even further underground than the graves, breathing by halves in the darkness of catacombs waiting to finally expire. Unless some brash attempt to commune with them succeeds.

True divination must destroy linearity. That is its only choice. The choice which cannot help but be made forms the pathway of the humiliated and reverent saint.

– Joshua Strawn

"Are You Land Or Water - Blue Vynil" 12" Gatefold LP 2016, House of Mythology
20.00EUR • approx. 29USD [ back in stock ] : [ add to cart ]
Nocturnal Rock songs interweave with moments of spectral ambience, creating a distinct and richly diverse cinematic vision, inspired by the likes of Earth, Grinderman, Talk Talk and Gato Barbieri yet existing in its own melancholic headspace.

Release date: 22.01.2016 (expected shipping date: 25.01.2016)

The Barbarossa Cave is located in the Kyffhäuser region of Germany, and takes its name from a local legend. According to such lore, Frederick Barbarossa – former German monarch and Roman Emperor of the twelfth century – slumbers within these caverns in a palace beneath the Kyffhäuser hills, his beard growing in circles around the table at which he rests, until either he reigns once more over a unified Germany, or the end of the world; whichever arrives first.

“I was and still am obsessed with caves,” relates Alexander Kloster-Jensen (Alex K), main source of the creative vision behind Norway’s enigmatic Kitchie Kitchie Ki Me O (KKKMO), who was inspired by a visit to this mythic location during the cathartic period that led to their new and long-awaited album Are You Land or Water on House of Mythology. “The beautiful rivers of water flowing inside and through caves. There are sleeping national myths all across Europe waiting to be explored and exploited and the Barbarossa myth is one of them.”

Kitchie Kitchie Ki Me O has bloodlines in the much-heralded Madrugada, whose albums Industrial Silence and Grit remain pivotal statements in Norwegian alternative rock, sculpting brooding and emotionally charged anthems as dramatic as they were captivating. Robert Burĺs – the band’s main songwriter – initially broke off to pursue a more garage-rock-oriented direction with My Midnight Creeps. Yet after his sad passing in 2007, Kitchie Kitchie Ki Me O evolved from said band, taking ingredients from Dr. John the (Nite) Tripper-style voodoo and Mali-blues (Ali Farka Touré, Tinariwen) to forge the idiosyncratic rock-sound captured on their 2011 self-titled debut for EMI, which met with both considerable critical acclaim and sold-out shows for the band in their homeland.

Are You Land or Water arrives at the end of a tumultuous period for Kitchie Kitchie Ki Me O following this debut, one in which they experienced both their studio being demolished and a takeover of their previous label, and in which Alex nearly quit music altogether. “Music didn't mean anything to me anymore,” he reflects. “I started to escape on my self-built bike, cycling into the woods around Oslo and doing long rides to other cities, discovering the satisfaction of being alone and in motion through the landscape. Just fast enough and far enough to discover real adventure.” However, it wasn’t long before he was coaxed back into action, initially with studio-based jams with Bez Farazollahi and frequent Ulver collaborator Anders Mřller. “It was relaxed and free floating without any meaning and purpose,” notes Alex. “It reminded me of cycling … just getting from A to B”.

What eventually resulted inspired by not only the likes of Earth, Grinderman, Talk Talk and Gato Barbieri yet existing firmly in its own melancholic headspace, is a record very different from the band’s debut. Nocturnal rock songs like the expansive ‘Saleph’ and ‘Going Forth by Day’ – inspired by the same-named art exhibition by Bill Viola (Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, 2002) – interweave with moments of spectral ambience such as the beautifully brooding ‘Europa’, creating a distinctly cinematic vision – richly diverse without losing the primal charge that’s guided the band since their inception.

Thus, somewhere from the anhydrite layers of the Barbarossa cave – whose location ended up titling two tracks on the album – arrived both a mythic intensity and a sense of tranquillity that have guided Alex and KKKMO through tribulations aplenty to discover new sonic landscapes to explore: “I wanted to design an experience that was warm and non-intrusive this time around. I have always been more interested in sounds and texture than making hit-songs,” reflects Alex. “Are You Land or Water is about tension, and describes the states of passive and active. You can not be the two at the same time, but the two states are equally important.”

– Jimmy Martin

Laniakea (United Kingdom)
"A Pot of Powdered Nettles - White Vinyl" 12" LP 2016, House of Mythology
20.00EUR • approx. 29USD [ add to cart ]
Laniakea evokes eternal vibrations devoted to living spirit in perpetual becoming. These four tracks of surging drone and melodic transcendence are cosmic hymns summoned by Coil-aficionados Daniel O'Sullivan (Ulver) and Massimo Pupillo (Zu).

Tower Gardens Road was an island surrounded by privet hedge and a rich wilderness out the back, around which the grime and grot of North London flowed, never penetrating. This fortress against the modern rush was shaped and transformed inside and out by the love and creativity of Ian Johnstone, gentleman satyr and Coil affiliate. Much of the house's interior was clad in dark stained wood, a dense menagerie of power amulets and the sidereal painting of Austin Osman Spare, the foliage outside filtering sunlight into a flickering green.

Over the years Ian Johnstone allowed those struggling against the high rents and broken loves of the capital to share his home. This generosity was repaid in the music that was created at 147 Tower Gardens, notably by Daniel O'Sullivan, who quietly foraged the sounds that made up albums by Ulver, Ćthenor and Mothlite in a room with ornately barred windows at the rear of the house. For a while he was joined there by Alexander Tucker, with whom he recorded the transportive psychedelic pop of Grumbling Fur.

Ian Johnstone died in the spring of 2015, 147 Tower Gardens becoming a place of grief and remembering as his spirit departed. The sacred interior was gradually dismantled and abandoned, in the process of packing an immense cabinet of curiosities into cardboard boxes, Daniel was visited by his friend Massimo Pupillo of Zu. The pair had met when Guapo (another of O'Sullivan's collaborations) and Zu played some shows together many moons ago. The pair share a love of sharing the creative process, and outside of Zu Pupillo has played in the Ex, and improvised with everyone from Peter Brötzmann to Oren Ambarchi to FM Einheit. He spends six months of the year at his home in Peru, studying ancient wisdom and power plants with the ayahuasqueros.

It had originally been planned for O'Sullivan, Johnstone and François Testory (who provided the transcendent choral vocals to Coil’s cover of "Going Up", the theme to sitcom Are You Being Served?) to work together on a piece of choreography tentatively called The Black Egg. With Ian departed and Tower Gardens in a state of flux and closure, the remaining pair began work, and in the midst of a great grief sounds began to flow with little discussion, the purpose only to celebrate the artistic and human heritage of dearly departed friends through music.

Drawing on a rich tapestry of influences ranging from the plainchant of Hildegard von Bingen to Alice Coltrane's vedantic tapes to the monolithic bass frequencies of Godflesh, Laniakea evokes eternal vibrations devoted to living spirit in perpetual becoming. These four tracks of surging drone and melodic transcendence are cosmic hymns, atomised riffs slowed and stretched to unveil a pantheon of sound in particle form.

On Laniakea, O'Sullivan and Pupillo distill the dusty air and must of 147 Tower Gardens Road, capturing the life and energy, art and magick that Ian Johnstone brought to this quiet, neglected and tatty corner of the metropolis. As London increasingly becomes Dubai-on-Thames, there will be few places like this in future times. Laniakea is therefore an elegy both to that house, to Johnstone, and ways of being that are increasingly suffocated, stamped out, ignored. Back at the house, the garden has gone, ripped up, destroyed, sent into smoke atop a municipal pyre. No doubt coat after coat of beige paint is being applied to try and cover the dark warm wood inside, and the ivy has been ripped from the brickwork. Ian Johnstone's objects are scattered to the winds. 147 Tower Gardens was more than a home in a storm or an island in a dying city. It was Ian, and everyone he welcomed in, and all they created there. Laniakea is a final signal, yet an eternal vibration.

Massimo Pupillo / Márton Csókás / Gabriele Tinti (IT / NZ)
"Embracing The Ruins - Red Transparent Vinyl" 12" LP 2021, House of Mythology
26.00EUR • approx. 37.7USD [ add to cart ]
To inhabit/perform the poems of Gabriele Tinti is akin to the Sysiphian effort of rolling the stone, to be constantly thwarted in the goal. Márton Csókás narrates poetry by Tinti over soundscapes by Massimo Pupillo (Zu, Laniakea, Uruk, Zu93, etc.).

To inhabit/perform the poems of Gabriele Tinti is akin to the Sysiphian effort of rolling the stone, to be constantly thwarted in the goal.

However, there are deposits of gold in this mythic stone which reflect the light, like small facets of wisdom, wrought from the alchemical journey, holding a mirror up to Nature, including that of our own; our broken limbs, torn hearts, empty souls, or the pull of the mouth in despair of our efforts, even our victories. The threat of meaninglessness and it’s liberation.

His words wrestle with the soul’s desire to be free of the trajectory from birth to death, or at least to understand it, through the gods, through mortals and their muses; all lying behind the mask of the individual, the actor on the universal stage inhabits luminosity and indolence, stagnation and regeneration, with the inevitable cycle, repeating, failing, reminiscent of the theology of Samuel Beckett, and the philosophy of the goddess Khali; Creation. Preservation. Destruction. His prayers and laments carry the thin smoke of both incense and excrement, of blood and saliva, mortal’s jewels, which we offer the gods we invent, both sacred and profane.

The characters Tinti draws from the Greek myths; the muses, the slaves, enable ‘the actor’ to inhabit the essential struggle of what it is to be human, like a Noh play, doomed to repetition and the transcendence gained from it, to be human under the burning sun, which both gives life and destroys. Our efforts and yearning, melting in the great fire , like the wings of Icarus, falling, in the glory of the effort, existing then, and now, born and dying into the hope of transcendence, each moment, each word, a prayer, a cry, an offering to the dimension of the Unknown, as represented in ritual and expression, the landscape of ideas built upon the efforts of humanity, recumbent, ruined, and from this stagnation and death, arrives the possibility, like the glint of light from Sisyphus stone, our opportunity.

‘The actor’ puts on the mask exploring the possibilities in detachment, in union, that the cosmos outside their self might be better understood within. – Márton Csókás.

"Amputation" CD 2016, House of Mythology
14.00EUR • approx. 20.3USD [ add to cart ]
A triumph of experimentation and abstraction, marrying a fearless innovative drive with stark emotional resonance which is likely to strike a chord with admirers of latter-day Scott Walker, James Blake and Ben Frost alike.

“To know what you have, and to give all of it up – even if you know that it’s going to keep haunting you for the rest of your life. Phantom pain. Diagnosing what is the best of two evils – is what this album is about.”

Amputation, the new album by Stian Westerhus, may be centred on dislocation, loss and melancholia, yet from such turbulent origins a work of life-affirming catharsis has arrived. His first release for House of Mythology – following a plethora of acclaimed collaborative and solo work – is a triumph of experimentation and abstraction, marrying a fearless innovative drive with stark emotional resonance. Otherworldly and exhilarating, it’s the sound of a virtuoso musician throwing away both caution and co-ordinates and taking a dive into the unknown, with spellbinding results.

“It´s music I’ve dropped to the floor repeatedly, maybe even on purpose. It’s music in a cracked mirror portraying the time it was created.”

Stian Westerhus started his musical life studying jazz, his work taking him firstly to Middlesex, where he graduated as a Bachelor of Music before his Masters at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium NTNU. Since then, he’s worked constantly, touring and recording with a dizzying array of artists including Jaga Jazzist, Supersilent, Nils Petter Molvćr and Motorpsycho, not to mention a series of solo records for Rune Grammofon. He has also made several commissions, like Ripples, Rapples & Disbelief with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra (2012), Longitude with Britten Sinfonia (2013) and Redundance 40 with South Netherlands Philharmonic (2014). His list of achievements is as lengthy as it is impressive, ranging from a BBC Jazz Innovation Award in 2008 to several Norwegian Grammy nominations (Spellemannprisen, where he has two awards to his name – with Jaga Jazzist for One-Armed Bandit, category Open Class 2010, and also in the Jazz category for Didymoi Dreams, his 2013 collaboration with Sidsel Endresen). Throughout, he’s consistently found ways to create new paradigms largely via a distinct and innovative approach to the mediums of six strings, pickups, effects and amplification.

“From when all ends came loose. Pieces, like mounted in my musicianship with rusty bolts, continuously oxidizing their way through my skin.”?

Amputation, however marks new frontiers for this always bold and intrepid pathfinder, encompassing a mission in which Westerhus’ ever-evolving exploration of his instrument combines with a series of soundworlds that seamlessly veer from tender melody to bracing electronic edifices of sound to convey a startlingly articulate speech of the heart. Though existing strictly in its own distinct headspace, the emotive cry of “How Long” – burnished by celestial guitar filigree and plaintive falsetto harmonies yet with a refrain that snags in the memory – is likely to strike a chord with admirers of latter-day Scott Walker, James Blake and Ben Frost alike. Meanwhile, the two part “Amputation” suite of Side Two is unflinching sturm-und-drang, using both forceful assaults of binary-derived noise and eerie disquiet to convey trauma and unease with bleak yet exhilarating potency.

Soon to be presented as a 16.1 surround sound installation at Notam in Oslo, Amputation is a fearless and uncompromising trawl into the murky depths of the psyche, one that has struck treasure in the form of an album unlike any you’ll hear this year – the sound of a mercurial artist reaching between thought and expression to arrive at a vision by turns harrowing and heavenly in its intensity.

“Thematically it’s about leaving what is most precious and sacred behind. About accepting loss, damage and defeat. About those moments when you realize you are on the very edge of life and society as you know it.”

"ATGCLVLSSCAP" CD 2016, House of Mythology
14.00EUR • approx. 20.3USD [ back in stock ] : [ add to cart ]
A new album, consists of over 80 minutes worth of multitracked and studio-enhanced live, mostly improvisational, rock and electronic soundscapes. Influences are diverse, ranging from Prog, electronica and Krautrock, showcasing Ulver's love of 70s music.

Release date: 22.01.2016 (expected shipping date: 25.01.2016)

In Newton’s basic laws of motion – those which lie at the heart of modern physics – the paradox stands that constant velocity is essentially as natural as being at rest. True to form, in the now twenty-two-year-old life of Ulver, only one constant has remained, that being a forward-driving spirit that has moved this mercurial Norwegian-based collective forever through challenges and adventure anew, irrespective of reductive genre pigeonholing. Moreover, their latest voyage into the unknown is no different, marking another new chapter for an outfit characterised by wild and inspiring unpredictability, along with a fresh triumph for one of modern music’s most iconoclastic forces.

The basis for ATGCLVLSSCAP – which the band has been working with under the moniker ‘12’ – arrives from recordings made at twelve different live shows that Ulver performed in February 2014, in which band the band vaulted into the deep end of an improvisatory approach to their performance. As Kristoffer Rygg, the prime mover of the band since its inception puts it wryly, “The tour was to be an experiment, kind of loose and scary for a band as ‘set in their ways’ as us.”

Although the line-up for these shows remained similar to that on 2012’s psychedelic covers album Childhood’s End, and the band had taken succour from the sounds and headspace they explored on that record, this was another break into new territory, using their live energy and spontaneity as the fuel for aural explorations that would surprise even the band themselves. “At the end of any album process, I can’t wait to do something else,” comments Rygg. ”So yeah, it is partly borne out of that feeling, being a bit bored with the circumstances. It was quite liberating to do something more in the moment. One night a jam could be five minutes, and the next it could be fifteen. We couldn’t have captured these songs in a studio environment.”

Once the tour was over, it was down to his bandmate Daniel O’Sullivan to take charge of these multitrack recordings, sculpting and editing hours of material in his North London enclave, formerly owned by charismatic artist and Coil associate, the sadly departed Ian Johnstone – as O’Sullivan noted, “The hungry ghosts of the now empty house appear to be burrowing into this record.” Anders Mřller, Kristoffer Rygg and Tore Ylwizaker got involved a bit later, honing things from their end in Subsonic Society and Oak Hill Studios, Oslo, before the vinyl cutting process took place at THD Vinyl Mastering, also in Oslo, in which the band was fully involved in the crucial initial cut of the 14” lacquer. What resulted is the widescreen sweep and atmospheric splendour of ATGCLVLSSCAP, ultimately a piece of work that exists above and beyond any conventional live recording, rather a hallucinatory travelogue as potent an experience to bear witness to as it was to construct.

As always in the world of Ulver, influences are disparate and diverse, yet as Rygg notes, “It’s quite tributary in a way, there are clear nods to sounds from the past.” Many of these dwell in progressive, electronic and krautrock realms, heralding a lifelong love within the band for the music of the 70s – the fiery mantras of ‘Om Hanumate Namah’ and the motorik drive of ‘Cromagnosis’ draw an astral trajectory between the propulsion of Kraftwerk/Neu! and the ritualistic intensity of prime Amon Düül II, whilst the spirits of both Klaus Schulze and John Carpenter are audible in the electronic soundscapes of ‘Desert/Dawn’, not to mention the Bernard Herrmann touch in the closing ‘Solaris’. Even when the band revisits an earlier gem from 2000’s Perdition City album, as on ‘Nowhere (Sweet Sixteen)’, its reinvigorated by their expansive and emotionally charged approach.

“We always feel like, independently of what kind of instrumentation we use, we’re still playing the same nocturnal stuff,” laughs Rygg. “There are a few motifs that keep recurring all the time in what we do, and if it’s in a rock form or an electronic form, it’s always there.” Yet as true as this may be, by shaking up their creative process, the band have summoned up a unique testimony to the creative power of a mighty force who remain blissfully free of genre or convention, ATGCLVLSSCAP is progressive in the truest sense of the word, a record that may be this capricious band’s pičce-de-resistance.

"Hexahedron - Live at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter - Blue Transparent" 2x 12" Gatefold LP 2021, House of Mythology
34.00EUR • approx. 49.3USD [ recommended ] : [ add to cart ]
Hexahedron documents the second of the two dazzling, sold-out Ulver shows in the legendary Studio at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter at Hřvikodden back in April 2018. A special commission and “an honourable undertaking”, as described by Tore Ylwizaker.

Hexahedron documents the second of the two dazzling, sold-out Ulver shows in the legendary Studio at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter at Hřvikodden back in April 2018. A special commission and “an honourable undertaking”, as Tore Ylwizaker put it in their career-spanning book Wolves Evolve – The Ulver Story, published last year. “To orientate our music into an art setting is appealing to me”, he said. “Doing whatever we want, not knowing what it’s supposed to become or where it will end up.”

During the shows at Henie Onstad the band found themselves trapped in a multidimensional “hypercube” in the middle of the asymmetric space. Inside it they experimented with all-new ideas in an installation as galactic as the music presented was unmistakably ulverish. Around them, the audience moved unhindered among hallucinatory lights and laser-guided melodies, losing themselves in interstellar clouds of gas, dust and broken junk of exploded stars. I suppose we were all sidereal messengers, cruising through the groovy galaxies.

Three years have passed, and finally it’s here. One continuous session of sixty minutes broken into five parts. Professionally multi-tracked in the gallery, a first go at the mix was done simultaneously with Drone Activity, early 2019. They left it for Flowers of Evil, for which the seeds had already been sown. You’ll notice. Then The Ulver Story was brought to a conclusion, with huge plans for their final dance. But as we all know, the pandemic put a spanner in the works.

Come 2021, and Anders Mřller and Kristoffer Rygg decided to restart the Solid State Logic console in Subsonic Society. A total recall made the job less gruelling than expected, they report, and in a fortnight the mixes were in stellar shape, ready to be mastered by Vegard Sleipnes via the same society’s good old Studer tape machine and collection of high-end outboard gear.

The result is spectacular, spaced out, and “astral black… with hints of Supertramp and Sun Ra”, as the band jestingly told someone on a social medium. But most of all Hexahedron is expansive, transportive and luminous. A moment of flight captured for posterity. A dancing star.

Or as curator Lars Mřrch Finborud states in the album’s liner notes: “a definite highlight in Henie Onstad Kunstsenter’s music and performance history.”
